More Twined Mats

This one is rather festive...an old pink kimono that by itself was quite dated and not too attractive, mixed nicely with some purples and greens from some other pieces. It is all silk. There is a gold thread that runs through some of the embroidery and adds some glitter to this mat - an indoor item, not really for muddy boots!

  1. I like this very much, particularly the mirrored border bands. What was your warp? ~Sabine

    1. Thanks! I used cotton fabric from sheets and lining from a robe, ripped into 1-1/2" strips. You can see the white at the ends...I suppose a dark fabric would give a more finished result but I only use what I have. I don't use silk (my weft is silk) because it frays too much and I get all tangled up in wispy strands. For the borders, I find it easier to weave both borders first, then work the rest of the rug. That way, they match and it also anchors your ends somewhat evenly so the rug doesn't pull in and end up smaller at one end. Have fun!

  2. I am almost done with my current rug, a scrappy purple, and am planning my next one, which will use denim from old jeans. I have some black broadcloth which I was considering for the warp, or maybe using cotton clothesline. ~Sabine

  3. Sounds great! Denim makes such a strong rug and is great to work with. I use heavy cotton twine ( a little smaller than clothesline) for warp sometimes...the only problem I've had is that the weaving slips around on it more so you have to really pack your rows tightly. Once I figured that out, I find it quicker to string the loom with some kind of rope! Good luck!
